Nairobi, June 4, 2024 — Prominent activist and comedian Eric Omondi was arrested earlier today after staging a demonstration against the controversial Finance Bill 2024, outside the Parliament buildings along Parliament Road in Nairobi. Omondi, known for his bold and often provocative activism, was joined by a group of ‘Mama Mbogas’—local market women—who voiced their concerns over the bill’s potential impact on small businesses and the cost of living.

The demonstration, which began peacefully, saw the group chanting slogans and carrying placards demanding the withdrawal of the Finance Bill, which they argue will disproportionately affect low-income earners and small-scale traders. The bill includes measures such as increased taxes on essential goods and services, which many believe will exacerbate the economic hardships faced by ordinary Kenyans.

Eyewitnesses reported that the police, who had been monitoring the protest, moved in to disperse the crowd shortly after it began. Tensions escalated as officers attempted to arrest Omondi, resulting in a brief scuffle. Several ‘Mama Mbogas’ were also detained in the process.

Speaking to reporters before his arrest, Omondi emphasized the need for the government to listen to the voices of the people. “We are here to say no to a Finance Bill that threatens our livelihoods. The people are suffering, and we cannot sit back and watch as the government imposes more burdens on us,” he said.

The arrest of Omondi, a popular figure known for using humor to highlight social and political issues, has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many Kenyans expressing their support for his cause and condemning the police’s actions.

Human rights organizations have also weighed in, criticizing the government’s handling of the protest. “The right to peaceful assembly is enshrined in our Constitution. The arrest of Eric Omondi and the ‘Mama Mbogas’ is a clear violation of this right,” said a spokesperson for the Kenya Human Rights Commission.

As of now, the authorities have not released an official statement regarding the arrests. Omondi and the other detainees are expected to be charged with unlawful assembly and incitement, charges that carry significant penalties under Kenyan law.

The incident has reignited debates over the Finance Bill and the broader economic policies of the government. With the bill still under discussion in Parliament, today’s events are likely to intensify public scrutiny and opposition.

This developing story underscores the growing unrest among Kenyans over economic issues and the increasing willingness of citizens to take to the streets to demand change.
