Kenya UDA Party, suspends Monday’s Nairobi County-level polls

The suspension happened because a petition was filed with the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal, and an order was issued on Friday. Embakasi North MP James Gakuya had been adamant that the elections should be conducted manually.

The National Elections Board of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has postponed the Nairobi County elections that were supposed to take place on Monday. Anthony Mwaura, the chair of the board, explained in a statement on Saturday that the decision was made due to an order from the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal.

The highly-anticipated elections were set to feature a contest between Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s camp and a group aligned with Embakasi North MP James Gakuya. Sakaja was considered the frontrunner, having gained the support of 240 out of 340 delegates in the constituency-level elections.

“This suspension is due to an order issued on June 6, 2024, by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, halting the election for Nairobi County,” the board stated.

“The Board will provide further updates on the new election date and any additional instructions in due course. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”
